Not the money maker we all thought

Although college athletics is a billion dollar industry, you will be surprised to see how much money it really does make. The truth is, the majority of colleges fail to earn money off their sports programs. In fact, only about 12 fbs schools broke even or made a little money off of their year in sports.

  • Scholarship money would have to come out of general funds of the university
  • The general fund helps students with scholarships, loans, classroom resources, and professor salaries
  • Only 2 sports contribute to the net gain of a university: Football and Basketball-They carry the slack of all the other college sports combined
  • If we take that revenue from football and basketball then other programs will start to be cut such as swimming or women's water polo

The bottom line is that there is no possible way to pay college athletes without causing more damage than positive gain.

With schools losing money year after year due to their sports programs how can they possibly get the kind of money to pay their athletes?
